Roy Exum: Meme From The Meanies

Hardly a day goes past that I don’t receive several strings of memes in my incoming emails and yesterday there was one particular collection that gave me pause for thought. First, here’s the definition of a meme: “An Internet meme (/mi?m/ MEEM) is an activity, concept, catchphrase or piece of media which spreads, often as mimicry or for humorous purposes, from person to person via the Internet. An Internet meme may also take the form of an image (typically an image macro), hyperlink, video, website, or hashtag.”

Almost every meme I get is funny – every day there will be something about Donald Trump with a fixation on his hair, the liberals take a bashing as well. Hillary Clint has surely set a record for the most appearances and no one is immune. I’ve even got several of myself and, while I am darn-near insult proof, a couple have been so clever I still look at them and laugh.

On Monday there was a string of “pro-gun” memes that … if taken at face value … seem to make a lot of sense. Any one of them would cause my liberal buddies to have the vapors but with today’s national media so slanted to the left, I wish I could think of a way to put each of them on Chattanoogan.com so you could hear from the other side.

I figured the next-best thing would be if I transcribed each and described the picture when necessary. Each could be a cause for a delicious conversation and my liberal buddies need to know what the ‘opposites’ are passing around:

GUN STUFF TO THINK ABOUT – FOOD FOR THOUGHT

* -- Picture of a bad car crash: “Guys, if we could just find out what car model happens to be involved in the most DUI accidents, we could stop DUIs by banning it, right? I mean, that’s supposed to be how it will work with mass shootings and stuff. Right?”

* -- A picture of some ditzy girl and this below: “If you outlaw abortions, abortions will just happen illegally … but if you outlaw guns, we will be safe from all gun crime.”

* --“The National Rifle Association kills 0 (zero) people per day and receives 0 (zero) in taxpayers dollars. Planned Parenthood kills 887 babies per day … or one every 90 seconds … and receives $500 million taxpayer dollars each year. And liberals think the NRA is the evil one?”

* -- “In 1776, Marquis de Lafayette was 18 years old. James Monroe was 18 years old. Henry Lee III was 20. Nathan Hale was 21. Aaron Burr was 20. Alexander Hamilton was 21. Just a bunch of kids, right? What do they know?”

* -- “If you cannot see the irony in having a gun ban enforced by men with guns, then you fail to understand why the Second Amendment was written in the first place.”

* -- There is a picture showing Michelle and Barack Obama standing side by side with Bill and Hillary Clinton with the words: “All Four (of these people) call Trump ‘Unfit’ …All four of these attorneys have lost their license to practice law.”

* -- The picture shows our nation’s past Vice President with the words, “This is Joe Biden. In 1990 he introduced the Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990. Since then, 92 percent of large mass shootings have happened in gun-free zones … but they blame the NRA.”

* -- “Folks, remember this: The AR-15 has been around since the 1960s. So, to act as if it is suddenly the problems is a lie … but they blame the NRA.” (NOTE: The ‘AR’ part of an AR-15 stands for ‘ArmaLite rifle,’ not “assault rifle.” ArmaLite, a California firearms manufacturer, began producing the weapon when Colt’s patents expired.)

* -- “Dear Ban-Gun Teenagers: Nine kids die each day from texting and driving. Let’s ban your cell phone too. Also, your car.” (Note: Latest figure from Centers for Disease Control.)

* -- “School shootings in Israel: In 1974 they began training teachers with guns. There have only been two school shootings in the past 44 years, and both shooters were killed by teachers. Have we learned anything yet, America?”

* -- “The FBI could have prevented the Florida shooting but is seems the only people they are capable of protecting are the Clintons.”

* -- “Eleven teens die every day from texting and driving. Time to raise the age you can get a smart phone to 21.” (Note: Latest figure from American Automobile Association)

* -- “You can ban guns, bows & arrows, hatchets, spears, cars, trucks, swords, box-cutters, knives, sticks, and stones … but you will never disarm evil.”

* -- The photo shows Hillary Clinton with the Boward County sheriff over the words: ‘And suddenly I’ve stopped wondering where the Broward County Sheriff’s Department learned to ‘stand down’ while Americans get slaughtered.’”

* * *

* -- What do these top ten cities (over 250,000 pop.) with the highest poverty rate all have in common?

Detroit, MI - (1st on poverty rate list) hasn’t elected a Republican mayor since 1961

Buffalo, NY - (2nd) hasn’t elected a Republican mayor since 1954

Cincinnati, OH - (3rd) no Republican mayor since 1984

Cleveland, OH - (4th) no Republican mayor since 1989

Miami, FL - (5th) has NEVER had a Republican mayor

St. Louis, MO - (6th) no Republican mayor since 1949

El Paso, TX - (7th) has NEVER had a Republican mayor

Milwaukee, WI - (8th) no Republican mayor since 1908

Philadelphia, PA - (9th) no Republican mayor since 1952

Newark, NJ - (10th) no Republican mayor since 1907

* * *

* -- “When you are right, you cannot be too radical; when you are wrong, you cannot be too conservative.” -- Martin Luther King Jr. (1929 - 1968)

* -- “The radical of one century is the conservative of the next. The radical invents the views. When he has worn them out, the conservative adopts them.” -- Mark Twain (1835 - 1910), Notebook, 1935

* -- “Liberals are very broadminded: they are always willing to give careful consideration to both sides of the same side.” – Anonymous

* -- “Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong remedies.'' -- Groucho Marx

* -- “As Americans, we must ask ourselves: Are we really so different? Must we stereotype those who disagree with us? Do we truly believe that ALL red-state residents are ignorant racist fascist knuckle-dragging NASCAR-obsessed cousin-marrying roadkill-eating tobacco juice-dribbling gun-fondling religious fanatic rednecks; or that ALL blue-state residents are godless unpatriotic pierced-nose Volvo-driving France-loving left-wing communist latte-sucking tofu-chomping holistic-wacko neurotic vegan weenie perverts?'' -- Dave Barry
