Children’s Emergency Care Alliance of Tennessee recognized Van Buren County 911 Central Dispatch, Fall Creek Falls State Park, Piney Volunteer Fire Department, Van Buren County EMS and Erlanger Life Force Air Medical at the Tenth Annual Star of Life Awards Dinner and Ceremony as the State Award in Nashville at Rocketown. The mission of CECATN, the host of the Star of Life Awards, is to ensure that every child in Tennessee receives the best pediatric emergency care in order to eliminate the effects of severe illness and injury.

The Star of Life Awards are designed to honor Tennessee’s pre-hospital providers for their lifesaving care. The ceremony reunited the EMS personnel on stage with John Charles Blunt, a survivor of heart attack.  As the narrative of the EMS call for saving baby Mr. Johnson’s life was read by Jennifer Kraus of NewsChannel 5, each provider received a Star of Life pin.

The evening recognizes these crews who are on the frontlines of emergency care. Below are the recipients for Region 4 Star of Life Award:

On September 23, 2017 John Blount was out enjoying the fall weather at Fall Creek Falls State Park. While he was on a bicycle ride, he started experiencing severe chest pain.  He collapsed near the “B” campground area and bystanders saw what happened and started CPR.  When rangers arrived they placed the AED on him and it advised a shock.  This was delivered and Mr. Blount regained a pulse but was still in critical condition.  Other park personnel responded with the rangers to assist with crowd control and medical care if needed.

Further medical care was provided by Piney Volunteer Fire Department and Van Buren County EMS before being transported emergently to Erlanger by Erlanger Life Force Air Medical.

Nominations for 2019 can be received from the public or healthcare providers.  To nominate an EMS save, please refer to the nomination packet https://cecatn.org/star-of-life/

Arming Teachers With Guns Will Be Too Dangerous - And Response (2)

Arming teachers with guns in the classroom, as Bill Lee proposes, would be the single most dangerous thing to happen to students in Tennessee history. Students and teachers in close proximity to loaded firearms daily? Across this state, in middle schools alone, there are probably hundreds of student/teacher conflicts a day. What if a student got hold of gun in a struggle with ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: Who Is This ‘New Voice’?

It’s easy for me to say that I either know, or know about, almost every person running in November for the state legislature. Yet when I describe Lemon Williams as the most exciting of the bunch, that’s because he's the only guy I had never heard of when he picked up his qualifying papers. He just turned out the best political aspirant I have had a conversation with in the last ... (click for more)
